The stage design for the opera La Clemenza di Tito was designed around the idea to solely use evenly colored cardboard boxes in various shapes and sizes to build the set. This way we had a extremely modular way to develop the setup along side the musical performance. Also, singers were able to use the stage design and remodel it during their acting, which gave it a unique liveliness.
This was also used to reflect the story of the opera: during the burning of the capitol performers and stage hands would tear down the fragile cardboard architecture only to rebuild it in the second act. The even color of the boxes was also adventageous for the light design: we could easily illuminate the whole set as needed.
